Prose: Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Essays

We accept prose works up to 6,000 words, and seek work that engages a multitude of narrative forms, from academic and personal essays to narratives that come straight out of “left field.”

We publish our online issues (Obra) and our postcard issues (Artifact) twice a year. Selections for postcards are made from the works published in the online issues.

Due to space considerations, only prose pieces under 500 words can be considered for print as Artifact postcards. Prose between 500 and 6,000 words will be considered for publication online only.

Formatting: Please follow these guidelines to format your manuscript. Only Times New Roman (12 pt) and Courier New (11 pt) black fonts will be read. Remember to double space your work.

Files: Name your submission file with your surname and the piece’s title, like this: Surname_Submission Title.docx. Only docx and rtf files are accepted.

Cover Letter: Please include a word count for your piece and an author bio of no more than three sentences written in the third person.

Simultaneous submissions are fine as long as you withdraw your submission promptly if it is chosen for publication elsewhere. NOTE: We will not publish reprints.

Please submit work that follows these guidelines to our Submittable page.

Poetry in the Expanded Field

Poetry in the expanded field encompasses many types of poetry and art that incorporates words. Submissions in this category can range from standard, written word poetry to visual poetry to multimedia, including gifs, slide shows, and audio-visual works.

We publish our online issues (Obra) and our postcard issues (Artifact) twice a year. Selections for postcards are made from the works published in the online issues.

For multimedia: If you would like your work to be considered for an Artifact postcard, please be prepared to create a still image. Minimum size for postcard images is 1200 x 1800 pixels.

Please send no more than five works at a time. For projects in Word or PDF format, please include all works in a single document file.

Cover Letter: Please include a brief description of your project and an author bio of no more than three sentences written in the third person.

Simultaneous submissions are fine as long as you withdraw your submission promptly if it is chosen for publication elsewhere. NOTE: We will not publish reprints.

Please submit work that follows these guidelines to our Submittable page.

Visual Art

As with poetry, the sky’s the limit. This includes comics, audiovisual works, and traditional media.

If you would like your work to be featured on an Artifact postcard, please be prepared to create a still in large postcard size, 6 in. X 9 in. Minimum size for postcard images is 1200 x 1800 pixels.

Please send no more than five works at a time.

Cover Letter: Please include a brief description of your project and an author bio of no more than three sentences written in the third person.

Please submit work that follows these guidelines to our Submittable page.:

For all submissions, rights revert back to the author after publication. While we cannot offer payment for work at this time, we will provide advance contributor copies. In addition, Artifact postcards will be distributed and discussed at the annual AWP conference, offering a unique opportunity to showcase your work.

I attempted to submit a story through your submissions manager page, but there was nowhere on that page to click to submit.
